Bullet points

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 5:16 PM
Does anyone know why bullet points are aligning weirdly for me in Expressive?

On both my entries page and friends page bullet points overlap the usericon in posts. It happens in both Firefox and Safari, i haven't looked at it on my laptop to see if it happens in IE.

I haven't made changes to my layout myself (i hope it's ok to post here if i haven't?). I'm using a paid account. Also the entry i capped was sent from loudtwitter.com but the same thing happens if i make bullet points in rich text myself, and as i said it happens on my friends page too.

RSS feed in the sidebar

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
Is there a way to use the custom box in the sidebar to display the headlines from an rss feed?  I'd like there to be links to my other blog's most recent posts in the sidebar of my LJ, but I'm not sure what HTML to use, or if it's even possible.  Everything I've come across uses PHP or scripts of some kind, and I was under the impression those wouldn't work.

Thanks!

I Need Help Getting Rid of a Border--SOLVED

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 9:11 AM
My account type is paid; my browser is Firefox 2.0; the theme I am attempting to customize is expressive and is called "River at Night"; and my journal can be found at urtead.livejournal.com. My problem is that I cannot seem to get rid of the border that separates the alpha and beta columns. Any help would be appreciated. Here is the css for the customizations that I have done so far, though it has been mostly background changes:

In Firefox, screened comments in threads are not indenting. They therefore appear to be starting new threads, when they should be indented below their parent comments.

I've noticed this bug on my journal for a while now. I think it started when the dashed border was added around screened comments. However, I always assumed it was just a flaw in my own custom CSS, which I'd try to get around to fixing some day. Just now, though, I changed my Theme to various other Expressive Themes, and the same bug is happening on all of them.

Then, since I use Firefox, I checked in Internet Explorer, and everything is showing up correctly there. The bug seems to be Firefox-specific. (I am not sure about other browsers or previous versions.)

Here are some screen shots of the problem and more details )

Needing help.

  • May. 10th, 2008 at 1:58 AM

I'm new to Expressive so I don't know much about the CSS. So, I used this guide. Eventually, I was able to make my own layout, little by little.

I have a few questions, though.

1. How do I fix my comment page?! It's all messed up. I want to customize it - from the comment header, text area, and so on. [This is what I'm talking about.]

2. In my friends page, how do I add a background to the userpic of my friends' entries like what I have on my entries.

Jeez! I don't know how to explain this. )

3. How do I change the little icons which denotes LJ user, LJ community, and such?!

4. Is it possible to place my lj currents at the top of my entry, just beside my userpic?!

5. When I hover on a userpic, there's a box about the LJ user. Can I customize that?! If so, how?!

Oh, by the way, my account type is Plus and I use Unstyled. This is where my layout takes place - [info]cherimey.

Thanks in advance! ~.^

* By the way, sorry if my English isn't that good.

Comment issues

  • May. 9th, 2008 at 8:00 PM
Hi, I'm quite new to Expressive and I have a couple of questions.

1. Is there a way to remove the dashed line in the screened comments? I know they're there for a reason but I don't like them.

2. Is there a way to move the userpic in the comments to float on the right side of each comment?

Thanks in advance!

Header Image and entry font questions

  • May. 8th, 2008 at 4:13 PM
I've looked all through the tutorials and tagged entries. Have tried all three codes in the tutorial linked to in the sticky post. Still I can not get my header image in Playful Cosmo to change to the one in river at midnight. The code works in everything I try *but* the playful themes and i can get playful clouds to work with the extra code the tutorial says *it* needs, but not with Cosmo.

code )

And I can't find how to get the font color for my entries to change from black on black to white on black.

I'm using playful Cosmo as my base, have a permanent account.

Thanks so much for the help!

Header image.

  • May. 8th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
I've put a custom header in my journal, but part of the original one is still there and goes across mine - any idea what I am missing to get this to go away? Its kind of pretty so I wouldn't mind just bumping it down to lie flat across the bottom of my own - any ideas on how to do either?

Thanks!

Sticky Post Background *HACK*

  • May. 8th, 2008 at 3:08 AM
I was just curious as to how, if it's even possible, to add a background image to the sticky post, and not to other entries.

You can see what I currently have at [info]livebackward. Code is now live and more updated at my own journal.

On this specific page having the background in every entry isn't a problem because of the length and number of the posts. But my personal journal posts tend not to be that long and since I have so many viewable at a time I feel that it would be too much.

The only option that I have thought of and haven't tried is putting the image code into the sticky post input form itself. I haven't tried because I don't think it will work. If I am mistaken please let me know.

I appreciate any and all help.

EDIT:
I have found a workaround for those that are interested. The idea hit me this morning after reading [info]av8rmike's comment to my conundrum.

If you use the following code to set the width of your alpha column
.layout-twt #alpha-inner {
width: 860px; }

You can use the following to place an image in the background of #alpha-inner
{background-image: url(http://pics.livejournal.com/danielefton/pic/000tft52);
background-position: 626px 184px;
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-attachment: scroll; }

You can add this to any other css options you have set for #alpha-inner.

- The first number in the background-position property is the xposition. It places the left side of your image horizontally the number of pixels specified. Placing the image at the right side of your sticky post would require a px number of #alpha-inner width (minus) image width.
- The second number isn't as easy to find, and moves your image up and down in the #alpha column. I found my number by trial and error.

This month is Mental Health Awareness Month, so the LiveJournal team is offering users a chance to support the Depression and Bipolar Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping improve the lives of those suffering from mood disorders. Proceeds from purchases of the Emerging Sun v-gift during May will be donated to the DBSA, so feel free to buy one. Or, if you really want to rack up some good karma points, get a bunch!

And don't forget: Mother's Day is this Sunday. Be a dear and check out the v-gifts shop. Send something that'll make her smile.

Advisory Board Nominations

We'd like to remind you that the nomination process for LiveJournal Advisory Board user-representatives has begun. If you think you're fit for the job, now's the time to nominate yourself! After all, you're the only who can do it. In two weeks, on the 22nd, the voting process will begin; we'll remind you about it again here.

If you're interested in keeping up with the nominations, watch [info]lj_election_en. We'll post the results and announce the winner by the end of the day on May 30th. The new user-representatives will be seated on June 1st. Further details can also be found in [info]lj_2008.
I'm working on re-designing the layout for the community [info]gardening right now.

1. I'd like to have the tags on entries be displayed at the top of the entry, below the entry title, rather than down with the meta data.

2. I'm looking to tweak the colors of the dates and widget titles. It's been a long time since I've fiddled with LJ layouts, s2 and the like, so a bit of guidance would be much appreciated.

3. Also, in the comments view- some comments have a different background color than the one I set- any thoughts on why and how to fix? Example here: http://community.livejournal.com/gardening/1978481.html

Thank you.

"From One Rose" Screening at Mary's Woods

  • May. 5th, 2008 at 9:22 AM
Yesterday four members of our staff attended a viewing of our movie "From One Rose" at Mary's Woods Retirement Community, in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

For those unfamiliar with this lovely establishment, Mary's Woods provides housing and health services for seniors, which includes retired Sisters of the local order (Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary).

Rose Festival Associate Executive Director Marilyn Clint spoke about the movie prior to the screening, then answered questions and shared memories with those in attendance afterwards. (Marilyn was the Executive Producer of "From One Rose" -- and also happens to be my younger sister.)

Personally, I was totally charmed by the lovely people in attendance of the event -- many who had dressed up for this special occasion.

Of course, I never mind another excuse to see it, as I'm probably one of the biggest fans of this film. I was fortunate to play my small part in the production by spending eight (busy) hours one day gathering up slews of family photos, many of which ended up being used to tell the Rose Festival story relayed in "From One Rose." (And, yes, it's true -- I do cry every single time I see it...)

For those of you who haven't yet seen the movie, you're missing something really special! It's more than just a tale about the Rose Festival -- and it's far from a simple documentary effort. It's a very human story -- one that includes excitement, romance and tradegy, while telling the history of Rose Festival -- along with large doses of Portland and Oregon history, as well. In fact, it imparts the feel of the what the nation -- and the world -- experienced during the 100 years it spans.

And there's never a 'popcorn moment' (boring part) during it!

Seniors gathered around us afterwards, prompted by the movie to share their own personal memories -- something that I think this movie manages to do quite well, by the way. What higher praise can you give a film than to say it entertains, makes you think -- and encourages you to share?

I look forward to future screenings -- including the big one on Saturday, June 7, at the Historic Hollywood Theatre (located on Sandy Boulevard in Portland). For more information about the movie, be sure to drop by the "From One Rose" page at our website. Who knows? You might want to join us when we gather to view it during Rose Festival this year!

Advisory Board Nominations Open

  • May. 5th, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Advisory Board Nominations Begin

This morning we are opening the nomination process for the user-representative positions on the LiveJournal Advisory Board. A full description of the process can be found here.

To get you started, here are the basic things you should know:

- You may only nominate yourself
- Each nominee will need 100 motions of support in order to be eligible to be a candidate
- We ask that you keep your comments on the nomination posts to "I support this nomination" or something to that effect; be kind to those who will need to count the "supports", please.
- Although the nominations and election poll will take place in [info]lj_election_en, you do not need to watch the community in order to keep up with the election; we'll announce everything here as well.

Everyone here at LiveJournal is looking forward to this first-ever User-Representative election! We'd like to thank everyone who is participating. Some words from our current Advisory Board members:

danah boyd: “LiveJournal is filled with very passionate users. These users have helped shaped LJ's various communities over the last decade and it gives me great joy that LJ is recognizing and incorporating users' voices into the decision-making processes. Having user representatives from different parts of LJ on the Advisory Board will help make sure that the company is meeting the needs of its diverse constituents.”

Esther Dyson: "I'm sure we'll learn a lot from the process, and later on from the two users selected as well. Especially, I hope that the discussions before the voting will be more meaningful and more focused on policy than those in some offline campaigns."

Brad Fitzpatrick: "It's cool that SUP is getting users involved with the LiveJournal decision-making process. I look forward to seeing who the community elects and the results of our efforts working together."

Professor Lawrence Lessig: “The user elections will provide a critical check on LJ's process of maintaining a valuable and trustworthy environment for the LJ community. The mandate of the elections will give the user representatives pride of place among the members of the Advisory Board. Each of us will look to them to guide us in our judgment about how best to make LJ the community we all aspire that it will be. I look forward to welcoming the user representatives, and learning a great deal from them.”

Security In Metadata

  • May. 4th, 2008 at 8:51 AM
I've seen this in other layouts so I'm wondering how to do it with Expressive: instead of the security being in the subject of the entry, I'd like for it to be in the metadata under the 'hearing' and above the 'groups' and obviously turned into text instead of the gray locks.

Thanks in advance!

This one is for [info]av8rmike - last week you posted part of a print function to hide the date and time on entries that [info]watchmebe requested, and while you knew what was in the code she posted that didn't make it through the validator, I don't -

(Edit: actually, I'm not sure if I need any part of the code she posted besides the date/time function you reprinted in the comments - reading through it there are edits to the usericon and other portions of the code that I don't need).

So I guess the real question is: is all the code I need to change the date/time here?

I want to rework that code for Bloggish so I can (finally) change one of my entries (the sticky post at the top of [info]anti_aol - it's had the wrong date on it for two years!) - and I want to take the modified-for-Bloggish code and publish it as a new tutorial on [info]s2_bloggish.

Also, before I forget - if I use the code you give me to hide the date and time, can I still keep my top post on top (assuming I don't change it's current date - Dec. 11, 2008)?

Thanks for your help.

ETA, 5-8-08: Resolved - code for Bloggish users is here.
